There are many examples of text from our media that parallel the book, The Giver. Some of these examples are articles about Edward Snowden, U.S. incarceration rates, Arizona’s ban on books, and songs such as muse. All of these texts have strong evidence of how The Giver society parallels our society.
The Edward Snowden situation and articles parallel to The Giver. In both of this societies there is secrets that Snowden and Jonas aren’t supposed to tell to anyone. Another way the Edward Snowden articles are parallel to The Giver is that they both have whistle blowers. Snowden told everyone that the U.S could hear their phone conversations and Jonas is giving memories to Gabe. Both the Snowden article and The Giver also have surveillance. The community Jonas lives in is watched by the elders and people are punished if they see them breaking the laws. In the Edward Snowden articles it also discusses surveillance “The U.S government has been secretly collecting phone records and internet data.” The U.S government are doing this to try to prevent a terrorist attack. As you can see is that the Edward Snowden articles and The Giver parallel in many ways.
The article about incarcerating the population of the U.S parallels to the book, The Giver. Both of these societies have a lot of prisoners. In The Giver people don’t know what is actually happening outside of their community, they are being controlled which makes them prisoners, like the prisoners in the U.S. Another way they are parallel is that in the U.S article people in jail are being controlled just like the people in The Giver. Some ways people in The Giver are controlled is that they aren’t allowed to see color, have feelings for others and be rude to others. In both The Giver and the U.S article they both discuss that no one is allowed to have bad behavior or do bad things . Overall, The Giver and the article about incarcerating the population of the U.S both have something in common, they both have a lot of prisoners.
The article Arizona’s banned Mexican American books, parallels to The Giver because they both banned books. In The Giver they banned books because if they read books they might get knowledge and notice that what the community is doing is wrong. The same thing is happening in Arizona. Another thing the Arizona article and The Giver have in common is that there is someone in charge that doesn’t want them to know what he knows. Both also have people who do have access to books. In The Giver community the receiver of memory is the only person that has access to books. They banned the books because if people read them it could cause problems. All in all, the article about Arizona banning Mexican American books and The Giver parallel because both banned books.
The song Harrison Bergeron parallels to The Giver in many ways. One way they are similar is that in both The Giver and the song both confiscated books. In The Giver they took away books so they didn’t know learn things they weren’t supposed to. Another way they are parallel is that in both there is sameness. Sameness was a big part of the community in The Giver because it could cause a lot of problems if everyone wasn’t the same. The song was also parallel to The Giver because people didn’t know what society was doing to them, they were aloof. They thought every thing they did was right, but it wasn’t. They were being controlled. Overall, The Giver and the Harrison Bergeron song are parallel in many different ways.
There are many examples that parallel to The Giver. Harrison Bergeron parallels to The Giver because in both communities there is sameness. In the Edward Snowden article there is also something in common, whistle blowers. In The Giver Jonas is the whistle blower. Another example that parallels to The Giver is Arizona’s ban on books. They banned books for the same reason the community in The Giver did. The incarceration article is another article that parallels to The Giver. It parallels because there is a lot of people in the U.S that are prisoners and in The Giver society all of them are prisoners, they just don’t know. All of these texts have evidence of how The Giver society parallels to our society.
